Getting to know King Legend

December 5, 2011 by skov // #kinglegend #tellafriend #hiphop

Getting to know King Legend What's good man, tell us a little bit about yourself as an artist?

King Legend, I'm 24 yrs old. from Waynesboro, Ms(Eastside Hwy 63) CoOwner of Slush Records w/ Team Twillie and Homicide. First cd dropped in 2009 entitled "CheckMate". Won the Beat Block Mixtape of the Year Award. 3 time SEA nominee. Currently on the Duck or Die tour w/ Papa Duck.

Your latest tape "Tellafriend" has been heavy in the streets since it dropped. How's the overall response been on that?

Its been incredible. I chose not to officially release it on the internet and focus more on the ground work, being that is where most of my fan base is. We pressed up thousands of cd's and hit campuses, clubs, and neighborhoods across Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Alot of artist's do great internet numbers, but aren't known in what we know as the hood. I came to find that my hottest songs on the net aren't hot in hoods. I've never performed my top 3 most downloaded songs.

What are some upcoming projects you got?

Papa Duck and I are still hitting the road every weekend and working on the follow up to Hood Alumni. We don't have a name for it. My big bro Team Twillie and I are about 5 songs into a project called "Blunts and Magnums". My patna J Garvi from Atlanta got an Ep called "Hoodlums".(Shouts to MMI and Outter Circle). I got joints w/ MS artist Blizz of the Coast Squad and my man Da Kid, who is an incredible artist from Atlanta.

You were on tour with Papa Duck for a little second if I'm not mistaken? How'd that go for you.

It went well. I met a lot of DJs and learned a lot from him. He introduced me to markets that I never knew, and never knew me. I learned how to actually put on a show and not just recite my songs on stage. You have to actually make people apart of the show. Most importantly, that you don't have to compromise who you are or what you stand for to be successful. As long as you're true to yourself and give people the REAL you, and be accessible so they can verify that it's real, the streets will accept you and you won't need bullshit co-signs from people who think more of their opinions than anyone else. I respect and love Duck a lot. Thats my big brother.
